Switzerland Travel Information & Essential Guide

Travellers from many countries — including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan — can enter Switzerland without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave the Schengen Area.

Everyone else needs a Schengen visa, which must be applied for at the Swiss embassy or consulate in your country of residence — allow several weeks. A new European travel authorisation (ETIAS) is being phased in for visa-exempt visitors, so check the official Swiss and EU portals for the current requirements before you book.

Border checks are rare but possible: carry your passport whenever you travel between Switzerland and its neighbours, including on cross-border trains.

Switzerland's weather changes quickly and dramatically with altitude — expect roughly 6 °C cooler for every 1,000 m you climb. A warm morning by Lake Lucerne can be near freezing at the top of a mountain railway on the same day.

Pack layers, a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes with grip. Sun protection matters at altitude even in cool weather, and sunglasses are essential above the snow line. Bring a swimsuit in summer — the lakes and hotel spas are worth it.

Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF), not the euro. Card and contactless payments are accepted nearly everywhere, including on trains and at most mountain restaurants, but carry a small amount of cash for alpine huts, farm shops and rural cable cars.

Some shops accept euros, but they give change in francs at their own rate — paying in francs is almost always cheaper. ATMs are widespread and reliable.

Tipping is not expected: service is included by law. Rounding up a restaurant bill or taxi fare is a normal way to say thank you. Visitors resident outside Switzerland can reclaim VAT on purchases above CHF 300 per shop per day — ask the retailer for the export form at the time of purchase.

Trains, postbuses and lake boats connect almost every village in the country, and the timetable is built so services meet each other — main lines usually run every 30 to 60 minutes. You rarely need a car.

A Swiss Travel Pass covers unlimited travel on trains, buses and boats, free entry to more than 500 museums, and discounts on most mountain excursions. If you are only making a few journeys, point-to-point tickets or a half-fare card may work out cheaper — we are happy to advise on which fits your itinerary.

Seat reservations are compulsory on the panoramic trains such as the Glacier Express and Bernina Express, and are worth booking well ahead in summer. Luggage can be sent ahead from station to station so you travel with just a day bag.

Switzerland has four national languages: German (spoken in the centre, north and east), French (west), Italian (south, in Ticino) and Romansh (a small area of Graubünden). Signage, menus and announcements follow the language of the region you are in.

English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, stations and on our tours, so there is no language barrier for travellers. A greeting in the local language — grüezi, bonjour or buongiorno — is always appreciated.

Switzerland has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe and excellent medical care. No vaccinations are required for entry, and tap water is safe to drink everywhere, including from most village fountains.

The general emergency number is 112. You can also dial 117 for police, 144 for an ambulance and 1414 for REGA mountain air rescue. Healthcare is not free for visitors, so travel insurance that covers medical treatment and mountain rescue is strongly recommended.

In the mountains, check trail and weather conditions before setting out, stay on marked paths, and turn back early if the weather closes in.

Power is 230 V / 50 Hz and sockets are Swiss Type J, which also accept the standard European two-pin Type C plug. Travellers from the UK, USA and elsewhere need an adapter.

Switzerland is not part of the EU, so 'roam like at home' does not apply to EU SIM cards — check your operator's rates or use a local eSIM to avoid surprises. Mobile coverage is excellent, even on most mountain passes, and free Wi-Fi is available at stations, on many trains and in nearly all hotels.

Swiss culture values courtesy, punctuality and consideration for others. Arriving on time for tours, restaurant reservations and transport connections is expected, particularly because public transport operates with remarkable precision.

A simple greeting before asking a question is appreciated. Depending on the region, locals may greet you with grüezi (German-speaking Switzerland), bonjour (French-speaking Switzerland) or buongiorno (Italian-speaking Switzerland).

Keep noise levels low on public transport and in residential areas, especially during the evening. Switzerland is known for its clean, orderly environment, and visitors are expected to help maintain it.

Many visitors underestimate the effects of altitude, weather changes and strong mountain sunshine. Even on warm summer days, temperatures at mountain summits can be dramatically cooler than in nearby towns.

If visiting Jungfraujoch, Mount Titlis, Gornergrat, Schilthorn, Glacier 3000 or similar alpine destinations:
