About this experience
The Glacier Express is one of Switzerland's most iconic rail journeys, connecting the mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz through the heart of the Swiss Alps. Often called the world's slowest express train, it is not about reaching your destination quickly. Instead, it is about enjoying every moment of the journey and the remarkable scenery along the way.
Beginning in Zermatt, at the foot of the famous Matterhorn, the train winds its way through mountain valleys, forests, and traditional Alpine villages. Large panoramic windows provide uninterrupted views, allowing passengers to fully appreciate the changing landscapes throughout the day.
As the train travels eastward, it crosses hundreds of bridges and passes through dozens of tunnels, showcasing some of Switzerland's most impressive railway engineering. One of the highlights is the crossing of the Oberalp Pass, the highest point along the route. From here, the scenery opens up to reveal dramatic mountain landscapes and sweeping views of the surrounding Alps.
The journey also passes through the spectacular Rhine Gorge, often referred to as Switzerland's Grand Canyon. Deep cliffs, winding rivers, and rugged natural scenery create one of the most memorable sections of the route. Throughout the day, passengers witness a variety of landscapes that range from high Alpine terrain to peaceful valleys and charming villages.
After nearly eight hours of scenic travel, the train reaches St. Moritz, one of Switzerland's most elegant mountain destinations. Surrounded by lakes and Alpine peaks, it provides a fitting end to one of the world's most celebrated rail journeys.
What makes the Glacier Express special is the experience itself. The journey allows travellers to sit back, relax, and watch Switzerland unfold outside the window. Every season offers a different perspective, from snow-covered winter landscapes to green summer valleys and colourful autumn scenery.
For many visitors, the Glacier Express is more than a train trip. It is one of the most memorable ways to experience the beauty and diversity of Switzerland from the comfort of a panoramic carriage.
