First mentioned in 1045, Schaffhausen grew into an important medieval city-state and later became a full member of the Swiss Confederation. As you explore the historic centre, you'll discover how its strategic position along the Rhine helped shape its prosperity, trade, and cultural significance.

During the guided walk, your guide will explain the heritage of the city's landmarks and recount the events that influenced its history, from its monastic foundations and medieval independence to the Reformation and the challenges of wartime. You'll also learn about the tragic bombing of neutral Schaffhausen in 1944 and how the city rebuilt while preserving much of its historic character. The journey then continues by rail towards the Rhine Falls. Along the way, your guide will introduce the history and significance of the Rhine River and explain how the falls became one of Switzerland's most celebrated natural attractions. Upon arrival at the Rhine Falls, witness the immense power of Europe's largest waterfall. Stretching 150 metres across and plunging 23 metres into the river below, the falls create one of the most dramatic natural spectacles in Switzerland. Your guide will share the story of their formation during the last Ice Age and explain how changing river courses and erosion created the landmark seen today.
