About this experience
St. Gallen and Appenzell show a quieter side of Switzerland. In St. Gallen, the old streets, cathedral, and Abbey District explain why this city became an important place for learning and trade many centuries ago. The buildings are close together, the squares are easy to walk through, and much of the city's history can still be seen in everyday life.
Appenzell feels different. The village is smaller, the houses are painted in bright colours, and local shops and cafés sit along the main street. Farmers still work in the surrounding hills, and the Alpstein mountains are never far from view. Visiting both places in one day gives a good picture of eastern Switzerland, where traditions, local life, and history remain an important part of the landscape.
